Nobody Can Compare To You

Yes, I am still alive. I know I have been neglecting my beloved blog, but I have a semi-acceptable reason: I have not gotten my camera back from the repair shop. Apparently some part had to be special ordered, and thus I am in blog purgatory, as it were, without any way of generating original images. Thus, I have a randomly googled image of Griffith Observatory instead of the real deal. Why Griffith Observatory, you ask? Because I spent the evening there tonight! Awesome, right?

Though I've lived in L.A. my entire life, this is only the second time I have ever gone to Griffith Observatory. And the last time was at least ten years ago. I think the only reason I don't go more often is because I am too lazy to sit in traffic and drive all the way up there. But it's so great to be able to see all the stars and catch the super-informative planetarium shows. Plus, today the major roof telescope was focused on Saturn, so that was pretty cool to see.

Is it weird that every time I see Griffith Observatory it reminds me of movies? I always think of either the rooftop Autobot meeting in the first (and most awesome) Transformers or Rebel Without A Cause. Poor James Dean. On a semi-related note, I finally finished reading East of Eden! I know it's taken a while, but I only read during breaks at work and it is 600 pages long, so cut me a little slack. It was just as beautifully written as I remembered.

However, I had totally forgotten the part where Lee tells the story of his birth and that's been haunting me for the past few weeks (if you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up; pretty much the most depressing and gruesome birth story I've ever read). Whatever the case, it was still totally worth it to reread it. And now, after that dense epic novel, I'm giving myself a break by reading Tina Fey's totally hilarious new book
Bossypants.

It is such an easy read (I'm already halfway and I just started today), and I am a die-hard Tina Fey fan, so I'm certain I will love it as much as I love her.
This may sound ridiculous, but I totally have my next book lined up: Kathryn Stockett's The Help. I may be the last person who hasn't read this, but the movie is out this summer so I must read it immediately. If any of you have already read it, let me know what you think!

In That Dream I Could Hardly Contain It

This week's FBFF questions have to do with our outside influences. I can't promise my answers will be the most insightful, but I can't wait to read what everyone else has to say on the matter :)

1. What magazines do you subscribe to?

My magazine subscriptions have more to do with the amount of disposable income that I have more than what I would actually like to subscribe to. I think, if the opportunity presented itself, I'd probably subscribe to dozens of magazines. But alas, I have neither the funds nor the time to read them all. Still, at various times in my life I am subscribed to Lucky, Rolling Stone, Teen Vogue, Entertainment Weekly, People Style Watch and Marie Claire.

2. Do you watch any fashion TV shows?

Not really. I'm kind of anti-reality tv as a rule, which means no Top Model or Project Runway. I do love the fashion of some of the scripted shows I watch. The professional attire of the doctors on Private Practice is pretty gorgeous. And of course, when I used to watch Gossip Girl every characters' clothes were a-mazing.

3. Beyond blogs, what websites do you frequent for fashion inspiration?

The only website I regularly hit up is Glamour.com. Their Slaves to Fashion blog always has something awesome to interest me. I also regularly view retail lookbooks - J Crew, Zara, H&M and Forever 21.

4. Advertisements play a huge role in forming public opinion about a product or brand… what ads do you like and why?

I really am not an ad person. I rarely, if ever, take note of them. I do kind of like the new H&M tv ads where they just show a model wearing an outfit and the price of the featured clothing item. I appreciate the simplicity and transparency of it. There not trying to reel us in with tricky advertsing tactics - they just want to sell clothes. I can respect that.

5. Do you own any fashion books?

No . . . but I always swear I will buy some! I frequently checkout fashion books from the library, but have yet to actually purchase my favorite ones. I am huge fan of the Lucky Style manuals and The Gospel According to Coco. And I am fairly certain that I will be buying Jessica Quirk's upcoming release What I Wore: Four Seasons, One Closet, Endless Recipes for Personal Style. My favorite kind of fashion books are the more practical ones, ones that guide you in how to dress for day-to-day life in a fashionable and flattering way.

So there you have it. Thanks Katy for another set of interesting questions and if any of you out there aren't yet a member of FBFF, head over to Modly Chic to learn how you can join in the conversation!

I Hope This Works Out

True story: I am sick. Not only has my camera been decommissioned as I mentioned here, but I also got a mean case of bronchitis last week. All Thursday I was unable to speak, and then full-on cold symptoms set in. Currently I have regained speech, but I've been left with a killer cough. I'm back in the land of the living, but I do get a bit self-conscious when I randomly burst into severe and uncontrollable coughing fits. But that's to be expected I suppose.

What's worse, I can't go visit my friend J and her new baby K until this illness is completely out of my system! Color me depressed. Nevertheless, I will be taking my camera to be repaired this week and I do plan on fighting through this cold by the end of the week, so here's hoping for a more typical blog post by Friday. Just wanted to drop you all a line so you'd know that I'm still (relatively) alive and haven't forgot about all of you ;)
